Doom Eternal cancels Invasion Mode but will get a single player Horde mode

Doom Eternal is celebrating a year since launch, and id Software has outlined future plans for the game, including cancelling a planned Invasion Mode.

In an open letter to fans celebrating a year since the game launched, the game’s executive producer Marty Stratton spoke on wrapping up work on the two-part Ancient Gods expansion as well as the shooter’s launch on Switch. Following fan reception, the studio has decided to change course with some of its originally intended plans.

“As many are aware, we intended to release a free Invasion Mode update for the game; however, the unforeseen consequences of the pandemic and remote working impacted the progress of development for this addition. Over this time, we have also seen and heard how many of you enjoy the range of gameplay and combat available in the expansions and master levels. With these factors in mind, we have decided to redirect our focus from Invasion Mode to creating a totally new single-player horde mode. We’re confident this horde mode will offer you more of the diversity and challenge you’re looking for in the game.”

The team also say they intend to refresh Doom Eternal‘s multiplayer Battlemode with a new ranked based structure. Stratton also says that the studio intends to add “a number of gameplay and balance updates” as well as another new map for the mode. They’ll be sharing more information on these updates at the annual Quakecon event scheduled for this August.
